That was the question asked by our Business Law teacher on our first day of class and we were to write a response consisting of approximately 300 words.......are you flipping kidding me is what I'm thinking to myself, I don't even think about lawyers and now I have to come up with an answer that consist of 300 words......geez louise, I'm going to actually have to think in this class. So I sit here and try to think of anything that has to do with the law or lawyer's and of course the first thing that comes to my mind is that stupid commercial of a local attorney who looks like he knows more about pumping iron than practicing law...uummm, not going to work, so I keep thinking and remember hearing about a lawsuit back in N.Y. where a guy went into an Autozone with a gun and tried to rob it. The two employee's working were able to get the gun away from him and beat the guy with a pipe. Long story short, the robber is now serving an 18yr sentence and has hired a lawyer to sue Autozone and the two men for emotional destress....Hey buddy are you really going to accept this case?? what the hell is wrong with this picture (and this my friend, is a true story). I also thought about the 2.7 million dollar lawsuit that was won over a cup of hot coffee that a lady ordered from McDonalds......for those of you who haven't heard this story: A lady ordered a cup of hot coffee from the drive-thru, put the cup btwn her legs, took the lid off to put cream and sugar in it and burned herself in the process. She then turned around and sued McDonalds because the coffee was too hot. I'm sorry people but if you're going to order hot coffee, please be prepared for the coffee to be Hot..and if you're in your car holding the cup between your legs, the chances are that much higher that you will get wet whether the beverage is hot or cold!!
As I continue thinking about these cases and others, I realize that my opinion of lawyer's really isn't that high, I've had a few interactions with them and they come across as being pompous, arrogant assholes who are out to make as much money as they possibly can, disregarding all the pain and suffering they may be causing, but in today's society, they are a necessity. There are so many people out there looking to make a quick buck and when it comes down to it, if I were the one getting sued, I'd want the lawyer who won the McDonald's lawsuit on my side.
